Funding Provided For Warburton Litter Prevention Project

Labor Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, today congratulated the Upper Yarra River Reserves Committee of Management for receiving funding through the Andrews Labor Government’s Litter Hotspots Program.

The Litter Hotspots program is an initiative to address localised litter issues affecting Port Phillip Bay and the waterways that feed into it.

Ms Symes said the Upper Yarra River Reserves Committee of Management were successful in receiving $15,000 for their Plastic Bag Free Warburton program.

“This project is all about further enhancing and protecting the local environment of Warburton and it’s great to see many local groups linked in to this project,” ms Symes said.

“The Committee of Management aims to see Warburton become a plastic bag free township, to reduce plastic bag litter entering the Upper Yarra River, and overall amount of plastic litter in the local community.

“The project will partner with local groups and businesses to deliver community education programs, support traders, including the development of plastic bag alternatives and conduct tourist promotional and educational activities.”

Ms Symes said the project will also lead to the development of communication tools and messaging to raise awareness and build local capacity to continue to reduce plastic litter entering local stormwater drains and the Upper Yarra River.

The third round funding has provided a total of $121,314 in grants to support nine local government and community partnership projects to prevent litter from entering storm water drains and reaching the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay catchment.

“Litter Hotspots is one of several programs in place as part of the Victorian Government’s $7 million commitment to protect the unique natural assets of the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay,” Ms Symes said.

“The Litter Hotspots program encourages community action to tackle litter in local areas, preventing it from polluting our waterways, and helping make a cleaner, safer and more appealing environment for us all.
