Families in Yea and Alexandra will reap the benefits of new and expanding childcare services thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, today visited two local kindergartens – Yea Children’s Centre and Alexandra & District Kindergarten – at the start and final stages of their significant upgrades.

Both projects totalling nearly $800,000 have been jointly funded by the Andrews Labor Government and Murrindindi Shire Council.

Ms Symes turned the first sod and kicked off $375,000 worth of refurbishments on the Yea Children’s Centre.

The upgrade will increase the size of a classroom, construct a new extension with a kitchen, laundry, cot room and staff toilet, repaint all walls and ceilings as well as improve access to the long day care room.

It will increase kinder places from 67 to 71, with construction expected to finish later this year.

Ms Symes also visited the Alexandra & District Kindergarten, to officially open the completed $405,000 upgrade.

Works saw the removal of the old kinder building and replaced it with a new fit-for-purpose building.

It has almost doubled the kinder places to 46.

“As a parent of two young children, I understand the importance of access to quality childcare in country areas and I’m proud that Labor has delivered on these projects for Yea and Alexandra families,” Ms Symes said.

“We’re delivering unprecedented investment in early childhood services right across Northern Victoria, so our children can get the most out of their great local kindergarten.

“Families in Yea and Alexandra and surrounding areas will be able to reap the benefits of this investment and give their kids great facilities to receive care and education.

“This is fantastic news for our local communities in Yea and Alexandra, Labor is investing in the early years so kids are ready for kinder, ready for school and ready for life.

“Labor has delivered a record $76.4 million to build, expand and improve kinders across the State and Labor will ensure that Eildon electorate kindergartens and childcare centres receive the Government support they need as they grow.”
