Making a splash in Benalla in time for Summer

Friday, 18 September 2020

Benalla locals will have another place to enjoy and cool down in the warmer months, with the town’s new splash park completed in time for summer.

Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes today officially opened the park, made possible with more than $900,000 from the Victorian Government delivered over two stages from the initial planning to completion.

The splash park was originally identified as a priority in the Benalla Rural City Community Plan 2016-2036 and is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to support rural and regional Victoria become even better places to live, work and invest.

Designed to suit children of all ages, the splash park is expected to become an ideal spot for locals and attracting even more visitors during Benalla’s hot summer months.

Features at the splash park include fountains, water jets and a family-friendly area, along with shade spaces and new landscaping including tree planting for shade, tables and chairs and footpaths for easy access around the park.

The new splash park has been built on the Lake Benalla foreshore, an area that will soon be revitalised thanks to additional funding from the Victorian Government.

The new Benalla foreshore project, supported by a $2 million grant from the Building Works Package will consist of 17 individual development projects including the expansion of the foreshore boardwalk and improved streetscaping, an interpretative trail about the lake, the construction of a floating pontoon and a new playground.

This is in addition to a grant to co-locate the cinema within the Visitor Information and Costume and Kelly Museum building, which will improve display space for the nationally significant Ned Kelly sash and cell, increasing visitor engagement and the Benalla Cinema experience for locals and visitors.
