The Victorian Government is taking an important step towards delivering a safer Northern Highway, with construction of a roundabout at the intersection of the Northern Highway and Wandong Road.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the Government is upgrading the intersection which serves as an entry point to the southern end of the proposed Kilmore Bypass route.

Construction of the $12 million roundabout will improve traffic flow and make the intersection safer for the growing community.

Almost 12,500 vehicles a day travel through this section of the Northern Highway, with 2,700 vehicles using Wandong Road each day.

Planning for the construction of the new roundabout will get underway immediately, enabling safety benefits at the busy intersection to be delivered sooner.

Around 25 per cent of serious crashes in Victoria happen at rural intersections, with research showing that roundabouts can reduce fatal and serious injury crashes at intersections by up to 85 per cent.

The design of the new roundabout will incorporate provision for freight movements along the future bypass route to the west of roundabout.
