The first of 14 north east Victorian road rebuilds are underway with a 1.15 kilometre stretch of Wahgunyah-Wangaratta Road being re-built near Robbins Road, Boralma boosting safety and reliability for drivers.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the package of works is part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $425 million investment to improve regional roads across the state.

Wahgunyah-Wangaratta Road is one of the main connections into the popular Rutherglen wine region with its 150-year-old winemaking heritage and over 20 cellar doors.

To ensure the road is strong and fit for purpose, crews will remove a badly cracked section of pavement and stablise the road base, before topping with a new surface for extra durability.

The road shoulders will then be sealed to further protect the existing pavement from water infiltration in what’s known to be a flood-prone corridor in the region.

Proactive works will also be undertaken to upgrade and seal the Robbins Road intersection, smoothing the transition from one road surface to another and creating a safer environment for all drivers.

Works will take place during daylight hours from Monday to Friday and are expected to be completed by the start of November, weather permitting.

Locals are advised that speed and lane restrictions will be in place around the clock to keep drivers and workers safe.

Once the project is complete, the speed limit will be restored to 100km/h.

During the 2019/20 maintenance season, crews will rebuild, repair and resurface around 1500 kilometres of the regional road network throughout Victoria – supporting around 1100 construction jobs in regional Victoria.

On top of RRV’s road maintenance program, regional councils are delivering 133 improvement projects on their municipal roads across the state thanks to round two of the Labor Government’s $100 million Fixing Country Roads program – including rebuilding sections of local roads, sealing gravel roads, and strengthening bridges.
