MYRTLEFORD CELEBRATES BIGGER AND BETTER INDOOR STADIUM

Myrtleford’s sporting community has been given a major boost thanks to funding from the Andrews Labor Government.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes today officially opened the upgraded and extended Myrtleford Indoor Sports Stadium, made possible with a $1.3 million investment from the Labor Government’s Better Indoor Stadiums Fund.

The stadium is a key sporting facility in the Alpine Shire, used for basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, squash and lifeball and is also utilised by local schools for sports and other activities.

The old stadium only had one multi-purpose court that was not up to modern netball specifications in terms of flooring and run-off space. The lack of court spaces limited clubs’ abilities to train and compete, meaning basketballers had to travel to the next town for the winter competition.

The Labor Government has listened and delivered with a second fully compliant court with sprung wooden flooring, doubling the stadium’s capacity and enabling more competition matches.

The project has also added a female friendly accessible changeroom, two accessible toilets, a large storage area and improved entry and carparking.

Evaporative cooling has been installed in the complex, significantly improving the playing environment in summer.

It’s part of the Labor Government’s strong commitment to sport and active recreation, gender equality and encouraging all Victorians to get out there and get active. Across Victoria, the Government has invested more than $850 million in community sport and recreation facilities since 2014.

The Government also acknowledged project partners Alpine Shire Council and the Myrtleford District Basketball Association for their commitment and support in delivering the project.
