10 May 2017 Numurkah Leader, Numurkah VIC (General News) WUNGHNU Primary School came up a winner in last weeks Victorian state budget, with a $70,000 windfall for capital works, as part of a statewide school modernisation program. Principal Kat Palmer said she would meet with the school community and education department representatives to prioritise how the money will be spent. The department will do an assessment to see what needs to be done and what our highest priorities are, she said. This will give us the opportunity to modernise the school, which is impressive for prospective parents, as we can offer as much as what the bigger schools offer, but in a close-knit community. Wunghnu currently has 13 students enrolled at the school, which Ms Palmer said is an integral and well-loved part of the local community. Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said the project will go towards the refurbishment of classrooms and facilities that are in poor condition. This funding deals with the urgent need of the school and they will benefit from the $70,000 in funding, she told the Leader. Ive seen country schools be very resourceful when it comes to capital improvements and I know Wunghnu Primary School will get the most out of this for their students. Other Shepparton District primary schools to receive the $4.5m maintenance package, include Tungamah, Bourchier Street, Ardmona, Kialla West, Orrvale and Mooroopna Park. The State Government has also funded $1mill for a 10 year Shepparton Education Plan. Shepparton district MP Suzanna Sheed says she is very happy the electorates education needs have been placed on the map in the state budget. Its wonderful to see this commitment to our schools both primary and secondary after years of neglect and progressive decline, Ms Sheed said. We must ensure our children are getting opportunities locally, and through early intervention, funding our schools and planning for the future, we are well on the way to ensuring the best possible outcomes for them. Northern Victorian Liberal MP Wendy Lovell said that she was pleased to see some investment in local education, but was disappointed that many district schools missed out. Disappointingly, the government announcement last week of $1m for a Shepparton Education Plan has put major investment in the districts education on the backburner for at least 10 years, Ms Lovell said.
