Kilmore Historical Society wins grant

05 Jun 2018 North Central Review (Kilmore), Melbourne (General News) KILMORE Historical Society is one of forty community groups to share in it $350,000 worth of Local History Grants, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced on Friday, June 1. The society will receive $3561 for their work on a textile assessment and conservation project to conserve rare wedding dresses dated from 1769 to 1885. Kilmore Historical Society secretary Barbara Wilson said the society will get the assessment from the University of Melbournes Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation. Well contact them and theyll come and assess the collection for us and give us a report on how to look after it and how to store it. Ms Wilson said. Were really pleased about it because its something that we need to know what to do and how to look after it. We dont have that expertise. Once society members learn how to better preserve these pieces, theyll be able to potentially add more items of clothing to their collection. Ms Symes congratulated the Kilmore Historical Society, saying the state government recognises the amazing work they do in preserving local history for future generations to see. This Victorian Government funding will help ensure that the Kilmore Historical Societys important work continues and we can bring their project to life, she added. Their work to capture the memory of unique aspects of Kilmores history, ensures that future generations of Victorians can appreciate and understand our varied and diverse history for many years to come. The announcement follows a $130,000 Living Heritage Program grant for the Kilmore Court House last year to fund urgent conservation works that were needed. Other winning recipients included the Country Womens Association for their project to preserve photographs and documents from their 90 year history, the Ballaral Memorial Concert Band for their Century of Music project. The Local History Grants Program is part of the Public Record Office Victorias ongoing support for community organisations and volunteers who work to preserve, record or publish our shared local history.
